I really like Van Gogh’s Starry Night. The colors and the way he painted the sky are amazing. I didn’t know much about him, but I heard something interesting recently in the library from my Dutch teacher:

Van Gogh didn’t like the Netherlands!

I was suprized! How can that be true? We all know him as a great dutch artist.

Netherlands Period

In the Netherlands, his paintings are dark and quiet. They show farmers and fields, but the colors are gray and dull.
One of his famous paintings is “The Potato Eaters”. It shows a poor family eating potatoes at a dark table. The colors are dull and brown, and the mood is serious. You can see he cared about people, but it feels heavy.

France Period

When he moved to France, everything became brighter. He painted sunflowers, fields, and starry nights with strong, happy colors. You can feel he enjoyed painting there.
Looking at his paintings, it seems France made him more creative.
